Hello there, I’m Regan and I’m so glad you stopped by Up Close & Tasty! I’m a self-taught, professional and award-winning photographer who specializes in “all things food” including brands, recipes, restaurants and travel.
Here I share visual stories of approachable recipes to inspire the home cook and focus on beautiful photography to inspire a connection between food and art. I cook, style and photograph all of the images on Up Close & Tasty and sell prints on Etsy. Some of my work is also available for commercial licensing on Offset. I’m originally from Minnesota and now live in Chicago with my husband, Mike and our chubby tabby cat, Ollie.
I was 32 when I started cooking; up until then I just ate. –Julia Child
I love this quote from Julia Child because cooking and food photography surprised me in my life. My Mom has always been an incredible cook and after meeting Mike, who also loves to cook, I finally started to learn too. I found myself really enjoying the process of cooking and was drawn to taking pictures of how beautiful the ingredients were. Although I had always had an appreciation for food, I started seeing it differently when I learned to cook.
My photography started with an iPhone and lighting from a window until my family surprised me with my first DSLR for my birthday. After that, I started cooking, styling and shooting every single weekend, while balancing my day job as an art director in advertising.
In 2013 I launched Up Close & Tasty. In the beginning, it was just my blank canvas to practice photography and post my work each week. It started to become a true source of inspiration for me and for the first time in my career, I felt like I had found a real creative passion. What started as a weekend hobby had turned into something so much bigger.
After a lot of hard work to grow my photography business, I quit my day job as an art director so I could focus on photography full time. I haven’t looked back since. If you’re truly passionate about something and show up everyday to practice your craft, “following your dreams” becomes more than just a fun idea.
It’s all up to you.
Look around, ask questions or reach out to say hello.
I would love to hear from you.
