Today is my birthday and I thought I’d take time to answer a collection of 15 questions that have come from fellow bloggers and fans/readers of Up Close & Tasty. I hope it’s insightful or helpful and inspires you to get out there and start (or continue) taking pictures. Please disregard question 14. Thanks for all the love and support you give me. It’s going to be a great year!
1) What five words describe you as a photographer?
Passionate, curious, driven, perfectionist, hungry.
3) What’s the best moment you’ve had as a photographer?
It’s really hard to pick… but, I will tell you that I recently found out that one of my images was shortlisted in the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year awards in London!! <happy dance> I am freaking out! Wish me luck for the next round!
4) Worst moment?
I’d have to say the lead up to doing this full time was pretty hard for me. I was balancing my day job as an art director while trying to build my photography business on the side. I became pretty burned out. My head was in one place and my heart was in another. But, my support system – Mike, my mom, our families, friends and fans of the blog – really, really helped me stay focused and I will never forget that.
5) What has failure taught you?
So far, it has taught me to be better prepared next time.
6) Best advice you’ve gotten so far?
“Keep doing what you’re doing.”
–My husband, Mike
7) Advice you’d give someone just starting out in photography?
Just know that we all started as a beginner and we’re all still learning something new when we pick up the camera. There’s really no such thing as magically “having the eye” for photography. It takes a lot of work and a lot of not-so-good pictures before you get the great ones. We’ve all been there, so keep practicing and don’t give up. Also, CreativeLive… I absolutely love this resource.
9) Dessert or appetizer?
Lots of appetizers… and wine, can we have wine?
10) Favorite food?
Anything and everything seafood. #oysters
11) What’s one thing you wish you would have learned about photography earlier?
Shooting in manual mode – it was a game changer for my work and really built up my confidence behind the camera.
12) What’s in your camera bag?
Nikon D7100, 2 lenses (50mm 1.8 and 18-140mm zoom), speed light, batteries, evian spray bottles, snacks and an apron…
13) Why an apron?
Because I am constantly handling the food and I need to wipe my hands off a lot. I also bring my two favorite lenses and keep them in the large pockets so I can switch between them easily.
14) What’s something people may not know about you?
I have been watching Young and the Restless since I was in 2nd grade.
15) Best photography quote?
The best picture you take will probably be tomorrow.
