One of Mike’s and my favorite places to escape to when we have the chance is Union Pier, Michigan. It’s only an hour’s drive from Chicago, but it feels much further away with the beaches of Lake Michigan and several nearby towns offering a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, breweries and wineries. Our good friends, Dan and Mike have a cute cottage near the beach and whenever we get a chance to get away with them, we jump at the opportunity. In April, we visited for a couple of nights and they introduced us to a new, small craft brewery that we really enjoy, Cultivate Brewing Company.
I developed a strong appreciation for the process of brewing beer after Mike started brewing his own at home. We’ve experienced first hand how this creative process is also very scientific… not to mention, our basement is now completely “brewery-focused.” We love visiting breweries so Mike can get inspired, taste delicious beers and of course, grab some stickers for his kegerator… and maybe a t-shirt or hat.
Cultivate is so much more than a nice tasting room with over 10 tasty beers on tap. There’s indoor seating with large garage doors that open to more covered seating outdoors. The space is open and welcoming. You can take a walk and explore their hop fields or just sit outside and enjoy the view of the hops and barley plot. It’s so beautiful and quiet.
Located in Berrien Springs, Michigan right off of Shawnee Road, Cultivate is only about a 10-15 minute drive from Union Pier and New Buffalo. Although they don’t have a full food menu, they frequently have food trucks visit and you can even bring your own, if you’d like. It’s a very laid-back and casual atmosphere for everyone, whether you’re on a date, out with friends or with your family, kids and dogs. Everyone is welcome.
After my shoot, I enjoyed the Wink which is their Raspberry Wheat beer – it was light-bodied and refreshing. We’ve also tried the Navigate, Strive, Smile and Pursue. There’s a variety of light vs. dark and hoppy vs. less hoppy. Take a look at their current menu here. They even have a new beer called Twist that makes its debut very soon… just in time to celebrate their one year anniversary.
I highly recommend visiting this brewery if you escape to Pure Michigan anytime soon. It’s one of those spots that makes it a little more difficult to come back to the city.
Cultivate, congrats on your success! Thank You so much for having me! We love your beer and will be back very soon!
